Artist's Comments

EDIT: 11/17/09

I reworked this... significantly. I have never before done such a thing with a piece... bear in mind that the painting was originally "finished" in June of 2008. I looked at it again recently, after having dug it out of the closet and thought it looked like it needed some serious work... So I decided that I would do just that. :D

Granted, I'm sure it's still off. It will likely always be off. Either way I'm more pleased with the overall effect it has now. If you're curious to see before and after details, here they are. [link]

(On a more negative note, due to the nature of this piece, Photomerge was refusing to cooperate. I had to piece a few sections of this by hand... :cries:)

This image was completed for my website's homepage. Mixed media on hot press Fabriano. Irish elk (Megaloceros) simply fading into nothingness; the leaves seem to carry him off... or something. I leave that up to you;)

It's kind of sad, in a way. Fascinating creature. Wish they were still around. ):

I looked up the Irish elk after looking at this the other day... today I was looking at stock photos of elk, was reminded of this and ended up searching for Irish elk art here, thus ending up back at this painting. I will have to fave it now :D the use of leaves, as in your moose painting, is lovely.

Thanks! :D It was hard to come across concept art of this lovely beastie so that I might understand its surface anatomy. For the most part, I just kinda made it up, from the other artist's perceptions I found. Not all that much that I could find, but glad you like the end result!
:iconmoodymand:
yes I suppose you have to rely on other artists' interpretations, but there don't seem to be many! I'm fascinated by this animal now. I think I will do some studies of elk and similar animals, then I might attempt to draw one myself. You're welcome :D

I love the way you've painted the elk in a realistic and detailed style, but at the same time the piece looks kinda abstract and dream-like. Very beautiful and well executed.
:iconpallanoph:
Why, thank you! I'm glad to hear that, it's what I was aiming for... subconsciously, of course!
:iconkalmanen:
Very beautiful piece, reminds me of fall season - leaves change colour and fall off, a bit like this elk is disappearing :)

i like the clean look in this pic in comparison to most of your other works. nice!
