Aldebaran: Quick Ref by pallanoph Aldebaran: Quick Ref by pallanoph
Trying to prevent a burn out between working on the pile of commissions, so I designed this guy up. What better creature to display space sparkles than Ren Fair Monsters? He is SO much fun to draw. And he's giving me even more reason (outside of large assignments) to keep trying to learn digital tricks/techniques.

His name is Aldebaran, and he's a work in progress. His bull's horns are a nod to his stubborn character, naturally, but he's largely benevolent, though often found alone. He's obviously vain, but you won't catch him admitting it. He also enjoys coffee, tea, and other hot beverages, Turkish coffee is a special treat.

Photoshop CS6/old Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet. Line drawings done with Copic multiliner because my current tablet can't do lines.

Thank you! I suppose the phrase "quick ref" is misleading for this one: mostly it refers to the fact that I slapped the various images together without planning it out. ^^; Rendering the headshots was painfully tedious! I think all the images took a combined total of roughly 30 hours. (Yikes... not actually quick at all!)

I don't have a solid quote for reference sheet commissions, since I have never done them, but I imagine they'd run well upwards of $100, considering how long this one took to make.

Really love the gradient of colours here. Wonderful design.  And I can see the tie in with you feeling the "Burn out" and his colour scheme ;)

Thank you! Luckily I'm not yet burnt out, more just wanting to diversify a little bit. Still love drawing birds, and the more I draw them, the more fun it gets. :giggle:

Embarrassing confession: Probably the first time I used the gradient tool to help set up the transitions between colors. I'm learning!

Thanks! I spent quite a while staring at various Hubble images. Kind of made it really hard to start with one color palette, probably went through 3 before settling on this one. :D COLORS ARE HARD.

The combination of lighting and color is something that continues to be the death of me. I try SO HARD but I feel I can't get past pretty standard lighting conditions in my work. I'd need references for more intense stuff. :XD:

If I had my way, my art wouldn't even be tone, just scribbly lines.

Ah yes dreaded lighting. Quite difficult in its own right, even more so when it's dynamic. Drawing woes..I feel you on that.

Mmmf, me too! Perhaps he works with textiles. Maybe he's so vain he's making a variety of yarn in his very colors. Perhaps he is collecting his own tail hair...

Why do I want to draw this now? :XD:

I'm glad :) It was the first impression that struck me before I noticed his stars.

And thank you! I still hang about here, gotta have that dosis of inspiration from the people I watch every now and again after all. Always glad to see one of your majestic critters pop up in there too. Keep up the fantastic work and all the best!
