Almalthea: The Last by pallanoph Almalthea: The Last by pallanoph
EDIT as of 3/9/15: This piece has been edited/improved upon and will be put up for auction. Prints and merchandise can be found on my society6! society6.com/product/the-last-…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

My first ever fan art submission. :iconlegaspplz: Yes, shocking, isn't it?

Some words: I was actually one of the few who read the novel before I ever saw the animated film, which I managed to see only a few years ago. :ashamed: So no "childhood stories" from me, even if I've always loved unicorns.

A more realistic twist to her, so I hope it works. Note that I've also kept those longish ears that she had in the animation. :D

Colored pencils can be therapeutic for me, which is why you're seeing so many of them cropping up amongst more important projects. Besides, I'm horrible and have to... distract myself.

An entertaining mix of Derwent and Prismacolor pencils on Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper, about 10" x 12"

The Last Unicorn © Peter S. Beagle, etc.

Thanks so much! Colored pencils are always so relaxing, I don't think I could ever dismiss them as a medium, even if other people do.

Love all those wispy whorls of hair, and her delicate features.  Classic fantasy is .  :D

Thank you! I'm just glad I decided to update her, because now I feel this art is more fitting of her character and my current abilities. :D

No matter how old I get, I'm pretty sure I'll always keep one foot firmly rooted in classic fantasy.

Ah ha, I also have no childhood stories about it! I always felt kind of left out since everyone else had apparently grown up with that movie. Actually, I had never even read the book until a few years ago when the Peter Beagle was at a convention I was at, so I bought a signed copy of the novel- and I still haven't seen the movie!

That's a theme with me, too: I missed half of the relevant pop culture revolving around movies and tv, since my exposure to them was limited to small bursts. :XD: I was encouraged to spend time outside as a kid, ha!

The movie is good in a nostalgic sort of way, I remember loving the novel. I should get a copy for myself. :)

It's definitely very good! I mean, I didn't pick it up until I was already an adult and had at least relatively more refined taste than your average, say, small child, and I thought it was one of the better books I've read, so it's probably at least as good as you remember it being!

Eek I love the Last Unicorn! I hadn't realized you'd drawn her!

I know this is an older piece, but I love the colors and lighting, and you totally caught that gentle look in her eyes.

Aw, I love it too, though I'd never watched it as a kid. :) Then again, unicorns have always had a very special place in my heart.

It's old, but I'm salvaging her right now, so she looks quite a bit better. I think I'll offer prints on society6 and sell the original soon.

Very flowing. I find the colors to fit beautifully and it has a lot of control to it. I like it a lot, though it is rather unusual to your regular subjects.
