Autumnal: WIP 3 by pallanoph Autumnal: WIP 3 by pallanoph
:iconfacepalmplz: I'm ashamed to say it, but it can be no other way... this piece will not be finished in time for the Spectrum 17 competition. I repeat: This will not be finished in time for this year's submission deadline. That said, I have all intentions of finishing it properly for next year. So don't you go booing me yet! :iconstaresplz: This will need months of polishing before I am satisfied with it.

This concludes my disclaimer for those who are likely to ask about it. :XD:

Again, more progress. (And here I thought I'd sworn off stating the obvious!) Progress is very slow, for a host of reasons. Besides, most, if not all of you should know that these sorts of works also require time for reflection. You don't just hammer things out like so, at least, not all the time. I go in bursts where I can work rapidly, but there needs to be spaces where I ponder the piece in between. Again, obviously.

I will give my brief apologies now to my commissioners for taking on this project at the same time. It will be put on hold in hopes that I find some time to work on your commissions. :forgiveme:

Previous WIP shots: [link] [link]
Original sketch: [link]

Specs: Watercolor, acrylics, ink, and colored pencil on Fabriano Artistico hot pressed 300 lb watercolor paper, 22 x 30 inches. (55.88 x 76.2 cm)

Enough of my yapping. *sleep*

How did you achieve that marbled/webbed effect on the sky? Is that just salt on watercolor?

Looking really good, April. The tree-ism of the beast is particularly nice, and I didn't get it til this stage.

So.. Lisa n' I are wondering how you remix colors such as the sky once you stop painting for a few days and continue in the same area later on. You match very well.

Thank you! I was quite worried that the tree like aspects might never properly emerge, but I managed to squeeze them in finally.

The majority of the sky was done in one day... I have a lot of my blue tones together in one corner of my handy disposable palette, and I seem to have quite good luck with mixing them evenly each time. There have been other projects where I mix up a larger amount of the pigment in a canister so I don't have to worry about it.

Of course, gouache isn't nearly as forgiving! Explains why I don't use it as often as watercolor.

I avoid gouache as much as possible, myself. WC is our friend.

I should try mixing up canisters. But they tend to dry out before I use them, when I do.

Ah, poo.... don't you worry about it, you've got your own skills I know, and as they say... time and practice.

More than anything it's finding what you like to use most and working with it. Watercolors are some of my most cherished materials. :D And I can't stand to work with oils! :giggle:

God I wish I had your talent with water colors and acrylics...

It is sad that it won't be finished for this years. But I know that with as much work you put into a piece that it doesn't matter. Your work will still always shine. :D

That is quite the large painting, how ever did you get it to scan so perfectly? And WOW. The colors. The textures. Amazing! I'm almost overwhelmed by all its brilliant eye candy. I cannot wait to see this completed, and I can only imagine what is must look like in person!

Oh, you know, plenty of overlap with the scanned sections and a wonderful tool called "photomerge" in photoshop. Quite easy. :D

Oof, I hope it won't be too overwhelming upon completion! :giggle:

Thank you! :)

Dimensions are listed: 22 x 30 inches (55.88 x 76.2 cm) This is a usual working size for me when I get intricate. :XD:

That's around the size I work on too, for paints. For drawings I use 18" x 24" (don't know how many cm's that is).
