Artist's Comments

EDIT: Finished this this evening! How exciting, right? Anyway, I'll be taking this to a small art sale tomorrow morning. I doubt it'll sell, but if nothing else, it will be amusing for anyone who comes by. :)

I edited some of that knotwork. It was looking particularly inconsistent. I still need to spray fix it, though I'm nervous that it might suddenly rain when I go outside to do so. But there you have it. Finished. :D
-----------------------------------------------

Well, then! Didn't think you'd be seeing this delightful fellow again, did you? :giggle: I didn't either, truthfully. :XD: But you see, I was looking for something more impressive to work on than my pallanoph color studies. ( They're killing me, at the moment...) so I remembered that this one had been WAITING since JANUARY. But I couldn't work on it in January, because it was just too bloody cold, and my hands wouldn't work! Some of you may remember me going on and on about it (if you are my first few watchers, that is... ;) ) I never thought I'd get back to it.

But lo and behold, four cups of coffee later and I'm going completely crazy on it. Jitters and twitches aside, I think I've made a lot of progress on the horse (note no progress has been made on that border). He's more properly shaded and his colors have been fleshed out some more. This has been a challenge: I learned from the mistake of working on the WRONG SIDE OF THE PAPER. :| :stupidme: I'm unsure if this is what's causing the odd, slight bleed and for the colors to start lifting off again each time a new layer of pigment is added. Either it's that, or my watercolors are inferior (:noes:) or I'm just plain inept. =P

Here he is in a previous submission: [link] If you can't see the progress, then simply count this as a properly scanned version! :giggle:

Critiques? Comments? Whatever else that comes to mind? Feel free to vent your spleen on it! :XD: Or whatever.

This is a very original concept: most of the Sleipnir art I've seen features a horse with eight legs crammed onto a regular horse body, or a horse with four legs that split into two from the knee/hock. The idea of actually lengthening the body in this way is one I have only seen a few times (I think it was a drawing of a centaur with a hundred legs or simialr)
The Norse theme in the piece is well excecuted: from the magnificent equine border to Sleipnir's breed, a Norwegian Fjord horse. The only part of him that looks a bit strange is where his neck connects with his chest: perhaps it could curve a little more

This entire piece is amazing. to pick out any ''faults'' would be nitpicking, but thats what critiques are for right?

I Love the idea! Not just the legs, but the mane and tail, I dont often see a design like that, its simple and effective.
The shading too, not too strong in lighting, but it still has amazing contrast and shows the muscles very well.
Also the pose, the speed, freedom and stregnth of the creature is so very well captured, i can almost see a landscape scenery behind it without it even being drawn!
My only 3 tiny crits are
the bump of the nose, for a horse perhaps straighter curve from the eye to the nose? [though i realise that you cant rub out anything with paints..]
the lower neck, maybe making it thicker where it joins with the shoulder, perhaps by bringing it out a bit?
and the dark areas above the back legs, between the stomach, and the other back leg. Perhaps if they werent as sharp or dark they wouldnt look as much like holes in the skin, or rips [unless they're meant to be?]

Thats all, as i said, the crits are so small theyre barely worth mentioning! Overall it is an amazing picture!

that border: MUST KILL.

Awesome interpretation of Sleipner! I havne't seen him in Fjord Pony style, but it really suits! I hope you do finish him, because it would be one of your best pieces!

In an odd way, the unfinished border almost looks like an intentional artistic touch. I really like it. :3

Is it trying to make out with that skeletal face...?

This is the best pic of him I have ever seen! When you are so use to seeing equines with only 4 legs, it is a hard thing to look past that, but you have accomplished working the 8 legged beast perfectly. I am really in love with the border!!!

We are not primarily put upon this earth to see through one another, but to see one another through!

Wow, I've always wanted to try drawing Sleipner, but had no idea how to go about all those legs. I really like what you did with the mane, oddly enough. Most of it along his neck has an almost Roman or Greek feel, and then goes into that really flowy forelock. Very neat look.

Also, that border is fantastic :o Did you reference anything for it, or use secret artist black magic to free-hand it?

Wow, 8 legs. However it does give the impression of several frames of movement frozen into one.

The excess of smileys very clearly displays your over-caffeineation :giggle:

I wish I had something intelligent to say for critique, but how do you critique an eight-legged horse? Not to mention everything about this is awesome. I just love all the little details on the legs and head.
Though it's amazing he doesn't trip over his own feet. Those odd Norse =P
:iconmegeso:
I think its beautiful. But I've got a question; How the hell do you do such beautiful borders like this?! Its amazing!
