So I took a little bit of time between the pile of sketch commissions/other projects to work on something for myself. The safest way to reintroduce myself to color beside quick watercolor work is colored pencils on colored paper, and I don't recall having worked with them on black paper before. This beast seemed like a fitting subject.

What is he? I can only tell you he isn't your ordinary unicorn. You'll have to suffer without a background for now, until I can think of something simple and fitting. (I keep thinking mist, but didn't want to ruin it as it stands now.) Suggestions are welcome, and encouraged.

Prismacolor and Caran d'Ache colored pencils on black Arches cover, 8"x14"

Art and concept April Schumacher. Please do not utilize. Thank you.

What a lovely beast! That skull head is wonderful. I'd hate to be on the business end of that horn and tusks! And how fluffy a hellbeast he is!

I would really like to feature this on the Tumblr blog chimericunicorns.tumblr.com, if that would be okay. If nothing else, can I drop a link to it?

Love the color control. Do you like drawing on colored paper? It seems to lend itself to your abilities with color well.

I love working with colored paper. It lets me be more minimalist in a way that works for me, and it makes working with color a lot more interesting. Which is always a good thing! :D

Driving into work this morning I saw six wild horses, there were four browns, a brown grey and and appaloossa. She was beautiful to, I guess today is about horses, I drew one at work on my lunch break. I like drawing wolves, but I am starting to love drawing horses now because they are challenging.

How do you mix media like that? I see some do like water color and colored pencils, and Ive been meaning to attempt something like that.

He looks absolutely fantastic, I love the scaly(?) markings! And the skull-y head is just fabulous, I look forward seeing him more <3 The black paper really works in this piece, it gives even darker and gloomier sense to it all :)

Thanks! :aww: I have an unfinished portrait of him somewhere that I might finish with watercolors when I get some time, and I think that the splatter effect of watercolor and ink will do well with his markings. So maybe we'll see more of him in the future after all.

I would say the hindquarters look a little small, but apart from that this is a very impressive image, although unfortunately I cannot help you with regards to suggesting a background.... =p

Sometimes images simply don't need them, although I know how you feel; when doing simple paintings I find it hard to decide what to put in the background, even if it's just a simple colour I think 'what colour, what texture, it can't just be flat, aaaah!'... :p

Maybe an old uninhabited castle ruin that has seen time pass by. Your not quite ordinairy unicorn would definitely deserve a nice background. Although he is doing extremely fine without it.

AWESOME

Thing I love the most here is the LIGHTING! It's so stark on his face and the leading edge of his chest and legs, then glowing dully off his rump. It seems cold, whereas his side facing us and his neck seems 'safe', blocked from the light.

Love the way the bone bits of his face blend into the fur and muscle, especially there between his eye & canine. <3

I almost never deal with drastic lighting, as you can likely guess, so working with black paper really pushed me to deal with it in a way a lighter ground never could. (Colored paper lets me be more minimalist, which I really like.)

And thank you! :D
