Artist's Comments

EDIT: I believe this image to be more or less finished. Unless, of course, you see something I should work on further. :) Colors probably aren't spot on with the original, but then again, are they ever? :giggle: They seem to like the image, now I've got to add some text in for show information. Let's hope that won't be too difficult! :D

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thought I'd give a little sneak peek to those of you out there who might be just a shred curious as to what I've been up to at the moment.

This is that poster project I've been prattling on about, for a local band. One of my co-workers (the band's lead singer/guitarist) came up with the concept based on one of their lyrics... "A buffalo in the belly of a whale." So we brainstormed some ideas and it all wound into this. (Don't worry, this is a WIP. It's standing at about 70% complete. ;)) So there will be a small herd of stampeding buffalo in the whale's belly when I finish. You can barely see them now.

NOTE: This is an exercise in an unrealistic color palette... in regards to the water especially. The whale is not wounded, nor bleeding. The water is just an ominous reddish orange, to clash with that calm aquamarine sky. I don't think you could harm that demonic looking old whale even if you TRIED. Just thought I'd mention that, before people start to assume it's a whaling scene. It's a band poster. Completely unrealistic. :)

I've got to get it finished in the next few days so they can take it to print... so that just means I'll still be "M.I.A." for a while still. There are also commissions that I need to continue work on. I've been trying to spend less time online in order to be more productive. So far, I think it's working.

Size: 11x17" (27.94 x 43.18 cm)
Mediums: watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and PITT sepia pigment liner on 140 lb hot pressed Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper.

Of course, comments, questions, critiques, etc. are always welcome. :la:

Holy WOW! That's incredible! What a brilliant rock poster! and the whole thunderous movement of colour with the eely-nature type border gives it a real past-time sort of feel. Wow! You are amazing!

I have no intention of taking a job. My work is going far too well - I can't afford to waste time earning money.

Wow, gorgeous colours and textures, powerful movement, and nice border design. The whale itself looks suitably impressive. My favourite part as it stands is the skin on the lower half of the whale - so luminescent!
:iconhollowwulfhart:
Woah, how long does it usually take you to do one of your paintings/drawings? It looks like a very long time:faint:

Still, I am really liking your technique, this would make a great poster :la: :D

Holy shit. This is epic. I love it when you show your diversity in art.

I don't suffer from insanity....

I enjoy every minute of it....
:icontidmatiger:
for some reason the whale is yelling YARRRPPPPP at me....I dont think whales make that sort of noise though. Great job! The red and blues are wonderful, i'm glad you made the water red, makes the whake EXPLODE out of the rest of the picture. Are you going to color "the pines"? Just wondering. If you stand too far back you can't see it very well. <--attempt on constructive critisizism :D Cant wait to see the finished product!
:iconaimee-evilcuteness:
Very nice, I like the deatil on the whale.

How did you get that swirl affect in the water though? I really love the sky to.

Brilliant work, keep it up, vest of luck that you get it finished:D

Type correctly so I can take you seriously

"in the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine, i would shiver the whole night through..." now that's going to be stuck in my head, lol

seriously though this looks pretty danged slick! I know you're not done yet, but would like to offer some constructive criticisms (though I'm sure you already know them). K, the designs on the sides are great, but they will need a muted tone of color so they don't outshine or compete with the main piece. Second, the whale I think could use some more pronounced scarring, perhaps look for photos of scars from giant squids? aside from that I've not much to say :) good job!
:icongoonlalagoon:
Looks great!
The whale does look like it's in pain, and the water does look bloody. But i guess when it's finished it'll look different.
